Stalker – Short Film Review

A young student takes a walk to clear his head. However even in the middle of nature, we are still surrounded by technology. As sinister events begin to unfold, it is unclear whether Michael’s phone will be his saviour or his destroyer.

“I see you”

Text message based horror stories have become increasing popular with apps such as ‘Hooked’. Michael Keane’s new thriller takes the concept a step further, bringing to life a terror centred on anonymous messages. Keane has both directed and starred in the film. His role as the sole actor in ‘Stalker’ is convincing and carries the plot well. The editing and the sound work together to help create tension as the story builds to a frantic finale.

The cinematography is interesting, highlighting the isolation of the protagonist while also recreating the sense of suffocation that social media and the digital age brings us. The unknown is often utilised to generate fear and ‘Stalker’ is full of mystery. The identity of the ‘stalker’ and their intentions are unclear until the end. So is the fate of Michael as his only hope of calling for help dies in front of him, proving another failing of the technology we love.

Keane’s film was screened at the Fresh Film Festival and is available to watch on YouTube now!
