She’s Not Your Type – Short Film Review

Barry’s friends meet his girlfriend for the first time. Over the course of their double date, they become more and more convinced that she simply isn’t his type.

The 2018 film from director Matt Vella certainly packs a punch (a whole load of them, actually). She’s Not Your Type is really everything you could ask for in a short comedy film; outrageously funny, obnoxiously weird and full of excitement.

Barry (Shane Millward) is confident that his friends, Sarah (Zoe Panaretos) and Anthony (Efkan Cetin), will love his new girlfriend. But Alex (Adrianne Armida) is an acquired taste. To everyone else in the room, she’s grenade wielding, man-hunting, spaghetti eating train wreck. But to Barry, Alex is an absolute catch. As good friends, Sarah and Anthony feel compelled to try and save Barry.

The story is a simple one, but executed flawlessly with attention to detail sustained throughout. The cinematography is exciting and Luke Walker does an excellent job of capturing the mundane setting of a restaurant with aesthetic flair. The same level of excitement extends to Vella’s slick editing which adds immeasurably to the humour and overall enjoyment of the film.

The four actors are all superb with an excellent onscreen presence. The dynamic between Panaretos and Cetin as the concerned friends, and Millward as the love-blind fool creates a compelling narrative. Of course, Adrianne Armida steals the show with her portrayal of the utterly bonkers, but also kind of badass, Alex.

How bad can a double date go? How crazy can one person be? She’s Not Your Type is a firecracker of fun that isn’t to be missed. Keep your eyes out as the film will be released on YouTube soon!
