One Plus One Equals Three – Short Film Review

Michael Dolha’s new film, One Plus One Equals Three, is a vibrant fragment of what feels like a larger narrative but it carries itself with purpose and precision.

Harper is a dedicated business woman whose life is a constant whirlwind and her husband, James, often feels swept along in its path. When talk of babysitting a friends child turns to questioning their own future, Harper must begin to consider that her marriage should have room for her husband as well as her job.

Both Harper (Franchesca Dolha) and James (Kam Rory) display a breadth of emotions throughout the film. Rory explores a deep frustration convincingly. Dolha communicates the uncertainty and fear of losing something that was so difficult to achieve with compelling realism. Her initial anger in the first third of the film becomes entirely resolved by the final third, concluding a spectrum of emotion with a neat denouement. Such range is an achievement in the context of a short film, where action must occur at an accelerated pace without appearing contrived. Franchesca Dolha executes this with ease.

Hopefully we will see more from the Dolha duo, Michael and Franchesca as they are an excellent team!
