The Light Keeper – Short Film Review

From writer and director, Tamas Levardi, The Light Keeper is a love letter to creativity. We become entranced by one woman’s journey from darkness into light, captured by her experience with discovering a passion for photography. We see her rise and fall; fail and fight. All towards the end of creativity.

The woman is portrayed by Alice Beton, whereas the voiceover that narrates the film is provided by Elizabeth Nightingale. Nightingale’s almost whispery narration pairs well with the visuals provided by Beton. Together they work in harmony to create a single, unified narrative. Like two individual twines woven together, becoming inseparable. On the screen, Beton is passionate and captivating. She takes the audience on an emotional journey, pulling us up with her to the heights of joy and dashing our hopes on the rocks of failure. But still she rises and continues to pursue success.

The metaphor of emerging from emotional darkness into a clarity of light is mirrored by the woman’s creative interest in light. This duality makes for a stunning montage of images, captured by the talented team. The cinematography is attributed to Tamas Levardi too, proving to be another string to his creative bow. The Light Keeper is visually entrancing and the effort the team have put into finding majestic locations for the film really pays off.

Rounding it off with Michele Masin’s stunning score, The Light Keeper is an all round beautiful example of filmmaking. A microcosm of intense creative experience.
