Tension and mystery are the driving forces of Michael Keane’s short thriller, Significance. From the very beginning a state of unease is established through the music. This is further reflected in the instability of some of the camera angles. ‘Significance’ makes good use of the Point-Of-View shot as viewers are aligned with the protagonist on his seemingly innocuous journey.
As the music suggests, however, this is not a simple walk; there are other things at play. The discovery of phone is the trigger of a series of events, building to a climax that generates more questions than it answers. It is only at this point that we realise we never actually knew anything in the first place. We don’t know our protagonist, his intentions, his motivations. And we know even less of the sinister occurrences that haunt him.
Shot over two days and edited in a week, Michael Keane’s ‘Significance’ is an interesting thriller with some great examples of cinematography and camera work.
