In 2018, Shaun Rose released his film Upstate Story (check out my review of this here) which has received praise from many critics. Preceding this project is a film that Shaun was never able to make, however it remains very important to him. The documentary details the power of creative ambition and the annoying reality of not quite being able to capture your vision with the resources available. Shaun takes us to various locations he was considering using for the film, titled Summer Daze, many of which he has a strong personal connection with. This intimate connection is something that manifests in Shaun’s filmmaking and adds particular poignancy to scenes in Upstate Story.
The documentary gives viewers a unique insight into Shaun’s process for making films, specifically showing story boards from the Summer Daze project as well as a couple of scenes. Shaun narrates these clips, explaining the difficulties he faced.
As the project collapses, Shaun’s focus turns towards his family and this eventually leads to the beginning of the production of Upstate Story. With some pretty funny behind the scenes footage of Shaun getting a quick driving lesson, yet more of the perils of filmmaking are explored. The documentary is intercut with an interview style arrangement where Shaun goes into detail about his experiences. For an independent feature, it’s professionally set out and well-constructed. Shaun makes sure to include the people around him who made filming possible which really gives a personal feel to the documentary.
Delving back into Shaun’s personal life uncovers hardships, stress and depression. The crests and falls of Upstate Story can be seen to mirror Shaun’s own life which is both crushingly sad and at times uplifting. Through unexpected downfalls and unknown depths, the filmmaker managed to pull himself through by throwing himself back into his project.
After years of struggling, Shaun finally completed the project. Upstate Story was screened at the Cinemafest film festival where it was well received, winning a silver award for Best Picture. With a string of awards to follow, Shaun’s tireless pursuit proved to be a success. And so ends a certain superstition involving a beard.
Making and Unmaking is an excellent follow – up to Upstate Story as the documentary flows through and around the award winning feature film. Both Upstate Story and Making and Unmaking are available to watch on YouTube now!
